Shchors and Sosnitsa

Sosnitsa is a specialist school for deaf children serving both Chernigov and Somskova regions. They have a good staff with a very positive approach to providing their children with necessary skills for their future life. Their friends from Denmark have made a considerable investment and have equipped them with a proper woodworkers machine shop where the boys receive proper vocational training as do the girls in their equally well equipped sewing workshop. In addition, they have been equipped with a specialist laboratory for the fitting of and repair and adjustment of hearing aids.
They are only the third centre in Ukraine and in gratitude for what they have been given regularly offer assistance to members of the general public. The buildings are mostly wooden and many are in need of renovation. Sanitation needs upgrading especially for the girls. Sports equipment, kindergarten toys and a piano are sought.

“Fairy Tale” at Shchors is home to 127 children. The buildings are in moderate condition and, although I have seen a lot worse, much of the sanitation needs minor work on it. The water heating system is in urgent need of attention. They had a nice workshop but no tools. BHA sent out, in April ’04, sufficient new hand tools for them to be able to start woodwork classes. The surroundings are uninspiring and some trees would improve the situation considerably.
